In his final novel, Island, Aldous Huxley wrote about the adventures of a shipwrecked Englishman on Pala, an imaginary island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The society on this island had evolved to the point where there was universal economic and social well-being and a high level of respect for individual rights and freedoms. Moreover, individuals were given every opportunity to develop emotionally and spiritually. One of the many unusual features of Pala are specially trained birds - mynah birds - whose sole function is to loudly screech out Here and now. Here and now. at random intervals. Huxley had studied many systems of personal development during his life, including the Alexander Technique. Matthias Alexander, the developer of the Technique in London in the mid-1930 s. He was already an established author, best known for his 1930 novel, Brave New World. But his poor physical state threatened to end his writing career. Huxley was very tall and awkward and subject to fatigue, insomnia and a weak...

Large businesses require a lot of IT infrastructure and a department to look after it. Small businesses often can t afford to have that sort of internal support in place, yet they need fully operational IT systems in order for the business to run properly. For businesses like these, external IT support can be a cost-effective yet vital resource. Avoid IT salary bills Even one experienced, trained IT professional can cost a lot of money. Paying a salary, tax, National Insurance, pension and any other benefits can make a big difference to your bottom line. For small businesses, there just isn t enough IT requirement to justify employing someone to run the system full-time. Instead, put your money towards your business, and pay a lot less for an external IT professional to help you when you need it. Visual arts are a class of art forms that include: painting, sculpture, photography, and other disciplines that focus on the creation of artworks which are primarily visual in nature. Visual arts are said to be important in schools since they tend to develop the intelligence, as well as the overall personality of students. In fact, studies have shown that students who are exposed to visual arts tend to display above average intelligence when it comes to mathematics and science. Likewise, students who are greatly exposed to visual arts have been observed to exhibit refined manners and develop a much-matured outlook on life. Most educators have also noticed that students perform better in class when visual arts are incorporated in their curriculum. Moreover, visual arts provide meaningful self-expression of all students. This is also the reason why a great number of educators have integrated visual arts in some of their subject areas in the curriculum. Visual arts educators make use of rich arrays of...

Tropical Depression Ernesto left the Florida mainland Wednesday, and like a pent up post pubescent teenager, quickly regained its stamina over the warm Atlantic waters. Ernesto was officially declared Tropical Storm Ernesto around 11 o clock that night. About the same time, the beaches east of Jacksonville experienced the first band of Ernesto, rapidly moving cumulus clouds accompanied by thunderous booms and bright flashes, winds around 25 mph and brief but torrential downpours. The bands continued racing onshore intermittently throughout the night and by morning it was over. The eye of Tropical Storm Ernesto had actually passed well offshore of North Florida, continuously gathering strength and churning up the waters as it made its way to landfall in the Carolinas. Weather wise, the storm was no big deal in the North Florida beaches area, and most people slept through it with little incident. But there were those who retired that evening with tense anticipation of what was to come the next day. As...

If you re one of many Americans who often feel moody or irritable, better sleep may help you beat the blues, according to a new survey by the Better Sleep Council. The national poll compared the quality and quantity of people s sleep to their reported mood levels over a one-week period. The results showed that those who received the recommended amount of sleep per day seven to nine hours were much more likely to report their mood as excellent than those who received six hours of sleep or less. This comes as no surprise to sleep researchers, who have long known that one of the first signs of sleep debt is increased irritability and depression. More than half of those surveyed were not aware of key factors that contribute to quality sleep. Factors such as a healthy bedtime routine and a sleep-conducive environment are easy to overlook - and easy to address. The Better Sleep Council recommends the following steps to help you start every day with a good night s sleep: Bedtime Behavior: For the best sleep...
